Health Implications of Acrylamide in Food
by Nutrition Man ~ August 22nd, 2009. Filed under: Food habits.
Cooking food at high temperatures increases the chances and concentration of acrylamide. Examples of foodstuffs with acrylamide include potato crisps and chips, baked products and even coffee powder, beer and tobacco. So those who take beer and smoke also increase the levels of acrylamide in their bodies thus being at risk of the health implications.
Although this topic is still under research, the presence of acrylamide in the body has been believed to increase the chances of one suffering from cancer especially breast cancer. Frequent exposure to it has been linked to infertility in men, that is, can damage the male reproductive glands by affecting the sperm count and sperm movement. Acrylamide can also damage the nervous system and when it gets into the body through the nose, skin or eye can make you feel nauseated, numb, and sweating among other problems.
Acrylamide intake and exposure also increases the level of toxins in the body leading to neurotoxicity related complications such as confusion, hallucinations, muscle weaknesses and drowsiness.
